I was born and raised in the Central San Joaquin Valley, in Merced, Calfornia, and lived there for 45 years. As a young girl, living in the country, my mom taught me how to sew my own clothes, how to knit, crochet, and embroider. She started hooking rugs in the late 60's when I went away to college.
In 1995, my husband and I moved our family to Minnesota in search of a better quality of life in which to raise our two sons. A year after we moved to Minnesota, my Mother gave me her rug hooking equipment and books. She told me that I needed a hobby that would allow me to create beauty and to make new friends. She was right! I am a self-taught rug hooker and have been hooking rugs ever since. I have hooked more than 50 wall hangings and rugs and am an active member of ATHA and the Midwest Rug Hookers ATHA Guild.
Since October 2005, I have successfully hosted two annual hook-ins in Owatonna. In 2016, I started hosting the Annual Spring Hook-in and Vendor Show in Owatonna. These events draw fiber artists from all over the United States. This has proven to be a very rewarding experience. I have made numerous friendships. I love the camaraderie among rug hooking and other fiber artists.
In the summer of 2016, I entered the Retail Challenge sponsored by the local EDA and the Owatonna Chamber of Commerce. After going through 3 phases of competition, I was selected the winner of the Retail Challenge. Winning the Retail Challenge provided me the opportunity to open Straight River Rug Hooking in beautiful, historic downtown Owatonna.
I am very grateful for the support of my family and friends in making my dream come true. Their encouragement, generosity and confidence in me, make everything work.
